We started this project in November 2011. Our concept was based on the Grameen System, established by Dr. Muhammad Yunus. The initial loan a client can avail is P 3, 000 which is payable with a loan term of three to six months. Starting with these small amount and re-loaning over time these women have taken the first step towards realizing their dream. Our main goal is to offer another alternative, a better path, to help lift people out of poverty.
We provide training to low-income mothers so that they can start their own “small businesses.” Goal achieved! This has been an extremely successful program and the mothers are selling their products locally. One of the more successful livelihood projects is the bayong (native baskets) making. We are glad to see the basket weavers have become independent and are now able to support their spouses in providing the needs of their families. Thank you so much for your continued support. Your purchases have helped uplift the lives of low income women in the community of Talakag, Bukidnon, Philippines.
Talakag, Bukidnon is located in a mountainous area with unusually rich soil. 100 years ago, there were many small tenant farmers who were "making a living" on 3 to 5 acres. However, most of the land is now leased by two big corporations -Dole and Del Monte. The land owner leases his land to large corporations where commercial bananas, pineapple, and papaya are raised. The small farmers then has only a small lot to cultivate, (maybe 100 square meters). They struggle because of the lack of capital to purchase livestock or seeds. The foundation has distributed over 200 goats to needy families during the past 7 years. There are also several women who are using our foundation grounds to vegetables for sale. This is at no cost to the women. We started our hog-raising project which has a great potential and we loan our piglets mostly to our micro loan clients.
One of the greatest gifts that we received in 2014 were two donations to drill a “water well” and construct a potable water system for our agricultural projects, but more importantly to provide free potable drinking water for the residents of San Isidro, Talakag. Prior to the water system, we could not initiate our swine program and the residents of San Isidro had to “fetch” water from a spring that is located 30-45 minutes from their houses.
